It was another rain soaked competition for the Patriot Cross Country teams this weekend as they partook in the 2nd Annual Rogue Running/Grass Routes Running Festival. The festival included D1 teams such as the University of Texas, UTSA, University of Houston, Sam Houston State University, and Texas State, as well as regional competition from Angelo State, Tarleton State, Texas A&M Kingsville, and Texas A&M International.

Competing over a slippery, wet, and muddy course the Lady Patriots won the non-Division One race, while the Patriot Men were sixth. Kelsey Bruce took home the non-Division I title by more than a minute. Overall she was sixth when factoring in the Division I competition. “This was a great performance for Kelsey,” said Head Coach Jake Phillips, “She was moving up the entire race and really ran well on a tough course.”

Following Bruce in was a big group of teammates including Glynnis MeadeJulie DurrwachterAnna SalazarSarah Rayas, and Ashley Spivey. “Our pack has really become our strength. There are four to six girls running hard, running together in every meet that we have been to. In the Championship portion of the season, that’s going to be very big for us,” added Phillips.

The Patriot men were led by Junior Jacob Phillips, who finished 12th overall. Phillips was followed in by FreshmanChris Springer in 15th. Rounding out the scoring for the Patriots were Sophomores Trent Smith (37th) and Joseph Hale (38th) and senior Josh Hughes (49th). Junior Josh Pauley was unable to finish the race after twisting his ankle midway through the competition. Pauley has led the Patriots in their previous two competitions.

“We had a tough break losing Pauley during the race, but I was really proud of the way Jacob and Chris stepped up today and raced,” said Phillips. “Trent and Joe are really working well together and we’re going to need them to continue improving meet to meet for us to achieve our goals of winning a conference championship.”

The Patriots are off this week from competition but will be back at it on October 13th, at the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival.
