In the second match of their four-match road swing, the Lady Patriots (13-5, 7-1) marched into Wichita, Kansas, and came away with a three-game sweep of the Newman Jets (3-11, 1-6). They will travel Saturday to Arkansas to face off against the team that has handed them their only Heartland Conference loss so far this season, Arkansas-Fort Smith, before a Tuesday night matchup with St. Edward’s in Austin to finish the road trip.

On Tuesday against Newman, it was the Lady Patriot defense that led the way as they chalked up nine blocks as a team and 54 digs in the three sets. Cameron Hartson and Kaycie Bird led the charge on the back row with 14 and 11 digs while Kristin Secord came up with two solo blocks and  three block assists to lead the defense at the net. On offense, it was Secord who led the squad with 14 kills and Erika Papadeas who chipped in 13 of her own.

While the final result was a three-game sweep, it was not as easy road for the Lady Patriots. All three games were won by the minimum two points with DBU scoring 27, 28 and 26 points. The DBU defense held Newman to a .096 attack percentage on the night and forced 27 hitting errors by the Jets.

Saturday’s afternoon matchup with Arkansas-Fort Smith is a chance to the Lady Patriots to climb into a first place tie atop the leaderboard with the Lady Lions. That match is set for a noon start in Fort Smith.
