Tuesday’s City Council Meeting Agenda

The agenda for the Regular City Council Meeting for Tuesday, October 16 has been posted.

Among the consent agenda items are items for temporary staffing contracts, traffic signal maintenance contracts, and fleet vehicle repair and maintenance contracts. Item 7C is concerning $76,795 for the purchase of needed books and media for the library. And, item 8C is to approve the agreement and the expenditure of $59,000 for police and patrol services on Interstate 20 and Highway 67. This item is also needed because it allows Duncanville Police Officers to patrol Duncanville’s surface roads and not be tied up with accident investigations and traffic on the highways.

In the items for discussion lies several requests for use of hotel occupancy tax funds from several entities and local businesses.

The Duncanville Lions Club/Sandra Meadows Classic is requesting $15,000 for the Sandra Meadows Classic Girls’ Varsity Basketball Tournament that is held during the Christmas break. These funds would be placed back into the city for the payment of hotel rooms for those teams visiting from outside the area. This year that includes an international team as a team from Australia will be participating in the tournament, along with teams from Alabama, Tennessee, and from across Texas. This is the 62nd year of the tournament.

The Duncanville Chamber of Commerce is requesting $15,000 to run the Duncanville Visitors Center for the City. The council chose not to fund this item last year. The Chamber would use the funds to update and support a working Visitor’s Center to promote business and community prosperity through economic, civic, and educational programs.

The Suburban Newspaper is requesting $18,000 for the development of a mobile application for smart phones. The Suburban is proposing an application that will allow smart phone users to find businesses instantly.

The Suburban is also requesting another $10,000 for a quarterly newcomers/visitors guide that would be mailed or delivered to all addresses that show to be newly occupied. The publication would highlight local businesses and government contacts.

The Parks and Recreation Department is requesting $23,625 for the Christmas parade and tree lighting event.

The council will also discuss a $10,000 expenditure for participation in the Best Southwest Chamber of Commerce for 2012-2013. Duncanville has been a partner with Cedar Hill, DeSoto, and Lancaster to promote the Best Southwest area. Associate members include Ferris, Glenn Heights, Hutchins, Midlothian, Ovilla, Red Oak, and Wilmer.

The entire agenda is below, and you can see the entire packet on the City of Duncanville’s website here.
