Three Duncanville HS students recently turned in excellent performances as members of the 2013 TMEA Texas All-State Concert Band, All-State Symphonic Band and All-State Symphony Orchestra.  Congratulations to junior Jazmin Yuen, a returning all-state clarinet player whose audition earned her fourth chair placement.  The talent of senior Derron All-State-BandHollingsworth (baritone saxophone) earned him a place in the All-State Concert Band, and senior tenor trombonist John Parker claimed a spot in the All-State Symphonic Band.   Congratulations to these three students who performed for thousands of music educators, fellow students, and audience members in the Lila Cockrell Theatre at the San Antonio Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Saturday, February 16.  The performance was part of the annual Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention activities.

One former and two current Duncanville ISD band directors were invited to make presentations at the TMEA Convention.  Britney Cook, assistant band director at Byrd Middle School, presented her first TMEA clinic entitled “Non-flutist: You Can Teach Flute Successfully.”  William Pitts, assistant band director at Duncanville High School, presented a clinic entitled “That Wasn’t in the Book: Lessons from our First Years of Teaching.”  Former Duncanville Director of Bands Tom Shine was the featured clinician for the 2013 TMEA Convention, presenting “Building a Band Program That Will Last: Questions Every Director Should Answer” for Texas band and orchestral directors.
