St. Edward’s Tops Patriots in Austin

One quarter of the way through the game Thursday night in Austin, Dallas Baptist (5-8, 2-3) led the Hilltoppers of St. Edward’s (11-7, 1-2) by as many as nine points. But, by the half, St. Edward’s had crawled out to a three point lead on their way to a 75-68 win over the Patriots. Nick Fox continued his fantastic play for DBU with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Jonathan Perry joined him in double-digits with 11 points. Charles Allen pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds and Jason Gentry finished the game with three rebounds and five assists.

rp_primary_DBU BSKTB-Newman-24To just look at the stats in the game, the two teams were almost dead even in every category – except two important differences. The Patriots turned the ball over 18 times to the Hilltoppers’ 10 and St. Edward’s hoisted 24 three-point tries in the contest – hitting on 10 while DBU shot 6 of 15 from beyond the arc. Both teams shot just under 50% from the field and almost identical percentages from long range but it was the number of tries for St. Edward’s that led to the final score.

DBU cut the Hilltopper lead to two just two minutes into the second half but a 10-0 St. Edward’s run in two minutes pushed their lead to twelve – and they maintained that double-digit lead most of the final quarter of the game. An Allen three cut the lead to five with a minute and a half left to play but Hilltopper free throws down the stretch pushed the lead back to the final margin.

Dallas Baptist will travel and play again Saturday afternoon in Abilene against McMurry University. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm with the Patriot Pregame Show beginning at 1:45 pm with Brendan Smith on the call.
