Smith Named to NCBWA Stopper List

Dallas Baptist Senior Michael Smith, a native of Mansfield, Texas, has been named to the 2013 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List. The list is a starting point for the association that they plan to narrow down as the season goes on and eventually use to vote one player as the best closer in Division I college baseball.

In 2012, Smith recorded six saves in thirty appearances to go along with a 4-1 record and a 3.86 ERA. The righthander struck out 57 in 66.2 innings and walked only 17, an average of only 2.29 free passes per nine innings. Smith also started one game on the season and threw five innings of quality baseball against Bradley on May 19 to record a win. Throughout his career, Smith has been used in a variety of roles and his competitive nature has allowed him to find success in them all. Smith is one of nine seniors on a team that advanced to NCAA Regional play in both 2011 and 2012, winning the Fort Worth Regional in 2011 and playing in the championship round of the 2012 Waco Regional.

Smith and the Patriots will open a brand-new baseball stadium on February 15 as they host Creighton University at 6:30 pm at Horner Ballpark in Dallas. The Patriots will play their first season in a Division I conference as they compete in the Western Athletic Conference and look to advance to the WAC Tournament to be held May 22 – 26 in Grand Prairie, Texas.
