Duncanville ISD – Smith Elementary School staff received a $500 grant from the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation that will allow them to beautify the school’s garden.

Smith teachers Oluremi Fadahunsi, or Ms. Ojo for short, and Tara Flat-Ferguson submitted the ‘Build-a-Barrel Project’ grant earlier this year. Funds from the grant will be used to revamp the school’s garden area.

Ms. Ojo plans to use the garden to help students learn math and science skills through hands-on activities.

“There are plenty of dots to connect between gardening, math and science, and we look forward to making those connections,” Ms. Ojo said.

Ms. Ojo, a former Smith Elementary student and a graduate of Duncanville High School, was excited to learn her school had received one of 15 grants awarded by the Foundation.

“I come to work each day compelled to make an impact on our students’ lives, much like the impact this district has made on me,” she said.
