Sophomore Mercedes Rios carded a 12 over par 84 on day one of the NCAA Division II National Champioship at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club in Shelbyville, Kentucky, on Wednesday.

The 6,300 yard, ever-so-challenging, par 72 Persimmon Ridge Golf Club saw some of the highest scores of the year from all competitors in the field on Wednesday.  Only 15 girls broke 80 out of the 70 player field.

After coming off rounds of 76, 72, and 76, last week in Litchfield Park, Arizona, Rios, just as the rest of her playing competitors, struggled on day one of the National Championship.

“It was tough out there today for everyone,” shared Head Coach Kenny Trapp.  “There are plenty of holes and some pins out there that serve as an extreme challenge for these girls,” added Trapp.

On a course where a score of 79 is currently in the top-15, Rios will have a great chance of making ground on her competitors on Thursday’s second round of play.

Rios will continue play tomorrow for day two of the NCAA Division II National Champoinship at 10:20 a.m. (EST). You can follow all of the action live on
