Regional Rematch Doesn’t Go Patriots’ Way

On a cold and windy Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark, the site of the 2012 Waco Regional, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (16-13) were not able to get any momentum going on the offensive side of the game in falling to Baylor (14-15) in Waco, 6-1. The Patriots garnered only four hits on the evening, none after the fourth inning, and seven different DBU pitchers combined to walk six Baylor hitters and, combined with two errors in the field, allow six runs. The loss drops DBU to 4-4 in midweek contests this season as they get ready for a Western Athletic Conference series in New Mexico this weekend.

The Patriots got on the board first in the third inning with back-to-back doubles from Ronnie Mitchell and Austin Listi off Baylor starter, Sterling Wynn. Unfortunately for DBU, that would be their only scoring on the night as they stranded six baserunners on the evening, including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth when the game was still tied at one apiece.

That fourth inning would come back to bite the Patriots as Baylor was able to score four runs on only one hit, thanks in part to three walks issued by freshman Joseph Shaw to open the frame and then a hit batsman by Jay Calhoun. Those four free passes were issued ahead of a three-run double off the bat of Cal Towey, a ball just over the outstretched glove of DBU leftfielder Jaime Garrido. The other two runs for the Bears came courtesy of misplays by Patriot defenders as only the four runs in the fourth were counted as earned runs against the Patriot pitching staff.

The Patriots will return home to Dallas late tonight and board a plane tomorrow afternoon for a weekend trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico, and a three-game series against New Mexico State. Jake Johansen will take the ball on Friday to try to end the Patriot two-game losing streak. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm with the Patriot Pregame Show beginning at 6:35 pm on
