“Pirate Day” at PACE

Staff and students at Mary E Smithey PACE Learning Center dressed up in celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19. This was the school’s first annual celebration, and teacher Valerie Kelley says it won’t be the last. She wanted PACE to participate in Talk Like a Pirate Day so that students would be introduced to the international phenomenon. “It was started by two guys and became popular after newspaper columnist Dave Barry wrote about it,” explained Kelley. “I thought it would be something fun and different that says ‘PACE.’ We created a dress code and included pirate words of the day in morning announcements.”
