Patriots Win Second Straight Over ORU

Dan Heefner has built this Dallas Baptist Baseball Program around hard hit line drives, quality starting pitching and a formidable bullpen. That’s the formula Dallas Baptist (7-8) used Saturday afternoon in defeating Oral Roberts (5-8) to clinch the weekend series, 8-3. Starting pitcher Cy Sneed (2-0) scattered ten hits over six-plus innings, allowing two runs and striking out three to pick up his second win of the season. Brandon Koch helped pitch the Patriots out of a big situation in the seventh while Ronnie MitchellBoomer Collins and Justin Wall led the twelve-hit offensive attack with multiple hits apiece. Chane Lynch homered and scored two runs in the game.

The Patriots opened the scoring in the fourth.  Mitchell walked to open the inning and, after fouling off several two-strike pitches to stay alive at the plate, Collins laced a double into the left-center gap to score him. Collins would then come around on a Michael Miller single up the middle and the Patriots quickly had a two run lead.

In the fifth, the Patriots would pick up right where they left off in the previous inning. Lynch led off the inning with a towering shot to his opposite field for his first homerun in a Patriot uniform. RJ Talamantes would then walk with nobody out and moved to second on a Jaime Garrido sacrifice bunt. Mitchell singled through the left side to move Talamantes to third and Talamantes would score on a wild pitch a couple pitches later during Justin Wall‘s at-bat. Wall would increase the lead to five runs with a lined shot up the middle to score Mitchell and that lead would increase in the sixth as Garrido singled to right with two strikes to score Lynch, who reached two batters earlier after being hit by pitch.

ORU would finally touch up Sneed for a run in the sixth as Jose Trevino led off the inning with a homerun but that was all the sophomore from Idaho would allow through six innings. The seventh, however, was a different story. For the DBU offense, they added to their run total with singles from Mitchell and Collins ahead of a two-out single from Austin Listi to score Mitchell to make the score 7-1. In the bottom half of the inning, Sneed ran into trouble.  After a single, walk and a single to open the frame, he was lifted after six-plus innings and ten hits for Brandon Koch. Koch, a righthander, entered the inning with bases loaded and nobody out in a six run game. His first pitch to Trevino, to same batter who lifted a solo homerun off Sneed, was grounded right at the third baseman Listi who started a 5-4-3 double play to record two outs. Koch then punched out the next batter to limit the ORU damage to one run in the inning and keep the DBU lead at five runs.

Koch cruised through the eighth and DBU added a run in the ninth thanks to a couple base hits and a couple ORU errors to make the score 8-2 to the bottom of the ninth. With Koch on looking for a three-inning save, ORU loaded the bases with no one out to start the inning thanks to a hit batsman, a hit, and a DBU error. Koch was replaced by Blake Webster who promptly got Trevino to pop out with the bases loaded before allowing an infield single to score one of Koch’s runs. A strikeout and a flyout would end the game however and clinch the three-game series for DBU.

The Patriots will try for a sweep on Sunday by sending Cory Taylor to the mound at 1:00 pm. The Patriot Pregame Show will begin at 12:35 on with Brendan Smith and Reagan Ratcliff on the call.
