Patriots Win Heartland Tournament Championship

Behind an early goal from Danielle Presley and a dominant performance from the Patriot defense, the Dallas Baptist Women’s Soccer Team earned their first Heartland Conference Tournament Championship, Saturday, with a 1-0 win over host-St. Edward’s University.

With the win, their 14th straight, the Patriots earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, beginning next week, with a chance that DBU will host first and second round games next weekend at Patriot Field. The tournament information will be released on the NCAA Selection Show, which can be viewed, Monday at 6:30 p.m. by clicking here.

The two clubs close the tournament with identical records of 18-2-0. The No.9 Patriots and No.5 Hilltoppers shared the Heartland Conference Regular Season Title, and DBU holds the advantage in the season series, 2-1.

The lone score in Saturday’s contest came in the 18th minute, as Presley knocked a 25-yard shot over the outstretched hand of Hilltopper goalkeeper, Danielle Licarione. Jolee Patterson earned the assist on Presley’s 17th goal of the season.

Kerry Edwards (18-2-0) worked the shutout in goal, earning one save on the only St. Edward’s shot on goal. Licarione also moves to 18-2-0, allowing the single goal, the Patriots lone shot on goal. Overall, the Hilltoppers outshot the Patriots, 6-4.

Presley was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, scoring three total goals. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team are Edwards, Ashley CoxMia RomoJake Cox, and Andrea Hutchins.
