Needing a good outing from their starting pitcher on Sunday afternoon in Wichita, Dallas Baptist (29-14) turned to Andrew Elkins (3-1) and he gave DBU exactly what they needed – and more. Elkins threw a complete game, four hit gem and stifled Wichita State (27-20) for a 4-1 Patriot win. Elkins needed 106 pitches to finish the game and the only run he allowed came on a ninth inning single after a two-out walk and two defensive  indifferences allowed the runner to third. Elkins walked five and only struck out one but only allowed four Shocker singles in the outing. Shocker starter Mitch Mormann was handed the loss after he lasted only 3.1 innings and gave up two runs, one of which was earned.

The Patriots scored all their runs between the third and fifth innings but that was enough for a four run lead until the ninth inning. They opened the scoring in the third with a single run after Kenny Hatcher reached on an error by shortstop Erik Harbutz and moved to third on a single by Austin ElkinsLandon Anderson then flew out to center to score Hatcher as DBU scored first for the third straight game in the series.

DBU added another run in the fourth inning as Joel Hutter, who went 1 for 4 to move his hitting streak to 23 games, led off with a walk and stole second. He moved to third on a Ronnie Mitchell flyout and scored on a Ryan Behmanesh single. The Patriots would load the bases in the inning but AJ Ladwig limited the damage by getting Hatcher and Elkins to strike out.

The fifth inning was the key inning in the game as DBU plated two more runs to give themselves a comfortable cushion at 4-0. Behmanesh, who extended his hit streak to 17 games, and Duncan McAlpine both singled with two outs to drive home runs and it looked like those runs would be the final runs of the game as Andrew Elkins was masterful and faced only eight batters over the minimum. His two out walk, however, came in to score after DBU did not hold the runner at first or second with two outs and a four run lead in the ninth inning. Wichita State eventually got the tying run to the on-deck circle but he would get no closer as Elkins closed out the game with a groundball back to the mound to preserve the win and his first-ever Division I complete game.

DBU will return to the Metroplex this week as they play at UT-Arlington on Tuesday and the Mavericks return the trip to Patriot Field on Wednesday before Evansville visits Dallas for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:30 pm with live audio on dbupatriots.com.
