The last time Patriot Baseball was under .500 was after the first game of the 2009 season when they lost to Missouri State. After Sunday’s 7-3 loss to No. 4 Rice (8-0), the Patriots find themselves with a 3-4 record and a four-game losing streak after opening the season with a sweep of Southeast Missouri State.

Taylor Massey (1-1) started on the mound for the Patriots and cruised through the first three innings with DBU leading 2-0 after plating single runs in two separate innings. Those runs came courtesy of a Duncan McAlpine RBI single in the first and a Ronnie Mitchell sacrifice fly in the third. Mitchell and McAlpine both finished the game with two hits, as didRJ Talamantes.

From there, the Owls took over. They scored a single run in the fourth and four in the fifth, all charged to Massey. He finished the game throwing five complete innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs. Jordan Staples relieved Massey and gave up one run in his 1.1 innings, and Stuart Pudenz also saw some action on the mound, giving up a run on two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.

The Patriots were never able to mount much of a rally against the Rice pitching staff. Their two early runs came off starter Jordan Stephens but Taylor Wall (3-0) came on in relief and did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings. Tyler Duffey closed out the game, recording his first save in 1.1 innings of work.

The Patriots will look to even their record on Tuesday as they welcome UT-San Antonio to Patriot Field for a game that is set to begin at 3:00pm.
