Patriots Roll to Easy Win Over Crowley’s Ridge

Nick Fox opened the game with a three point basket – and neither he nor his Patriot teammates ever looked back Saturday against Crowley’s Ridge College. Playing in their first game in a week due to finals, DBU scored the first 17 points of the game, and 26 of the first 27, as they rolled to a 91-39 win in The Burg Center. TJ Clark led the way for all scorers with 18 points while Fox and Wesley Gipson both scored 12. Fox scored his 12 in only eight minutes of play.Russ Johnson led the Patriots in minutes with 24 as he scored 11 points and picked up two steals and a blocked shot on the afternoon.

The Patriots held the Pioneers to only 29.8% shooting during the game but only shot 48.7% themselves. DBU was 5-20 from beyond the arc and shot an uncharacteristically low percentage from the free throw line (10-17) but held a wide margin in points due to their outstanding defense on the day. The Patriots forced 34 turnovers during the forty minutes of action – including 21 steals – while also blocking six shots. “Our defense was good today,” said Head Coach Blake Flickner. “Anytime you can force action with your defense, and force the other team out of their comfort zone, you are going to create turnovers and put them in bad shooting positions. We did that today with a team effort, and a lot of different guys on the floor, so I’m proud of the effort and intensity we played with.”

DBU held a 41-11 advantage going into the break and expanded that to 52-11 before trading the next 36 points with the Pioneers. The 70-29 advantage at the second media timeout would only widen before the final buzzer. The Patriots had assists on half of their made baskets (19 of 38)  and Jordan McGowen and Ishmael Awange both picked up two blocks. DBU limited CRC to just nine trips to the foul line, where they collected four points.

The Patriots will now take 13 days off for the Christmas holiday before returning to action in Abilene on December 30 to face Abilene Christian for the second time this season. The Patriots won the first game of the season series, 80-72, back on November 29 in Dallas.
