Patriots Open Conference Play with Win Over SJSU

Playing in their first conference game in the Division I history of the program, Dallas Baptist (12-10, 1-0) defeated Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State, 13-3, with a sixteen hit attack and a three homerun performance to help Jake Johansen (3-2) to his third win of the season. Johansen scattered twelve hits over six innings and struck out three. Of the three runs scored by the Spartans, only one was earned as DBU made two errors behind the big righthander at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. Justin Wall helped the Patriots to the large margin of victory with four hits while Duncan McAlpineMichael Miller and KJ Alexander all homered. McAlpine, Miller and Alexander all finished with three RBI.

rp_primary_Miller2The barrage started for the Patriots in the second inning as Wall picked up his first hit of the contest with a single up the middle and Miller and Nash Knight followed with doubles to score the first two runs of the game. Knight would pick up another hit a couple innings later to finish with two hits and an RBI. The score remained 2-0 until the fifth when DBU scored five runs on four hits, including two homeruns. McAlpine hit an opposite field blast to score Ronnie Mitchell andBoomer Collins with one out and Miller homered two batters later after another Wall single. San Jose would get two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but DBU would increase their lead in the sixth to 10-2. Mitchell plated two runs with a single to left and Austin Listi picked up his only RBI in the game by being hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Johansen would pitch around some shaky defense through the middle innings to limit the Spartans to only the three runs in his six innings and Aaron GilbreathCaulin Cragle, and Joseph Shaw allowed only a single base-runner through the final three innings. Each struck out one batter in their inning of work and did not allow a hit.
