Patriots Open Conference Play With Win Over OPSU

After six non-conference games to open the season, and losses in four of those games by a combined eight points, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (3-4, 1-0) traveled to Goodwell, Oklahoma, on Saturday afternoon to open conference play against Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-4, 0-1). DBU fell behind early, trailing by seven at the half and by as many as 14 in the game, but held on for a 94-91 win. Jordan Kirschke led the Patriot offense with 25 points on seven three-pointers and four free throws while Nick Fox chipped in 24 points and nine rebounds. Cory Carden and Charles Allen also scored in double-digits with 10 points apiece.

DBU found themselves down by seven points just three minutes into the game at 12-5. Fourteen minutes later, with 3:34 left to play in the opening half, the Patriots found themselves down by 14 points, mostly due to 12 of 25 shooting from the field. They were able, however, to trim the lead to seven at the intermission and it was that effort in the final three minutes that set up play in the second half.

A Kirschke three with seventeen minutes left to play in the game cut the Aggie lead to three and an Allen layup on the next DBU possession put the game at 50-49. OPSU would miss a jumper on their trip down the floor and Carden hit on his jumper attempt with 16:49 to give the Patriots their first lead of the contest. The game would go back and forth from there until the 13 minute mark when Fox scored a bucket on a move in the post that gave DBU a lead they would not relinquish.

In the second half, DBU shot 67% from the field, and overall, Kirschke hit on seven of nine attempts from beyond the arc. His hot hand carried over to the free throw line, where he was perfect, and the rest of his teammates followed, hitting on 26 of their 31 attempts at the charity stripe.

DBU will take another seven day break before playing again as they travel to Odessa, Texas, on December 8 to take on UT Permian Basin. That game is set for a 4:00 pm start with the Patriot Broadcasting Network Pre-Game Show, sponsored by Fort Worth Harley-Davidson, beginning at 3:45 pm.
