Patriots Lose For First Time in Conference Play

For the first time in conference play, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (5-6, 2-1) found themselves on the short end of a close game after falling to Arkansas-Fort Smith (6-5, 2-0) by a score of 75-72 on Thursday night in The Burg Center.

Nick Fox led all scorers with 25 and Wesley Gipson and Jonathan Perry each poured in 16 points. Fox also led Patriot rebounders with eight boards while Gipson pulled down four of his own to go along with two assists and a steal. The Patriots led the game by as many as nine points early in the first half but could not overcome a seven point Lion lead with four minutes to play. Gipson’s last second attempt at a three-pointer came up short and a 50% shooting night for DBU went for naught. They will return to the court on Saturday as they host Newman University at 2:00 pm for their second-straight conference affair in Dallas.

In the first half, DBU held UAFS to 31% shooting on their way to the early lead but, by halftime intermission, Fort Smith had tied the score at 29. In the second half, DBU shot an outstanding 55.2% from the field, but could not overcome seven three-pointers from UAFS as part of their 11 triples on the game. Five of those threes came from the hot hand of Jake Toupal, who finished the game with a team-high 18 points. DBU shot only 4 of 17 from beyond the arc with Jonathan Perry and Jordan Kirschke splitting the duties from long range.
