In possibly their best overall game of the season, the Dallas Baptist Patriots defeated the conference-leading Newman Jets, 79-69, at home on Saturday afternoon. The Patriot defense allowed Newman to only shoot 35.7% percent on the afternoon, their second straight game holding an opponent to under 40% in the game. The Patriots were not much prettier on their end of the floor, shooting 45.3% for the game, but they found their way to the free throw line 19 more times than Newman and converted 16 more points from there while also outrebounding the Jets, 37-33.

Nick Fox led the way for the Patriots on the scoreboard with 18 points, even though he missed several minutes in the second half with a bloody nose, while Jordan McGowen added a double-double, recording 14 points and 10 rebounds.TJ Clark chipped in 11 points, including 5 of 5 from the charity stripe, while Donovan Bridgeforth scored 10 in 21 minutes.

DBU found themselves down 31-28 at the half but went on a 10-0 run over a three minute span in the second half, taking a 65-51 lead with 4:01 left to play in the game. They pushed that lead to 17 with a couple Clark free throws with just over three minutes to play and, as a team, converted 7 of 8 free throws in the final 1:46 to hold on to the ten point win.

Ishmael Awange recorded three blocked shots on the afternoon and the Patriot big men were able to find their way to the basket on a routine basis throughout the game. The Patriots outscored Newman in the paint 24-8 in the second half and that dominance was evident in that DBU attempted 11 three-pointers in the game while Newman was forced to attempt shots from distance, going 6 for 22 from beyond the arc.

DBU will turn around and travel to Austin, Texas on Monday as they prepare for another important conference game and look to continue their climb up the Heartland Conference standings. Now 5-3 in conference, the Patriots will take on St. Edward’s Monday, a team they defeated 84-76 back on January 14. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
