Patriots Fall in Season Opener

The Dallas Baptist Patriots (0-1) opened the 2013 season, and Horner Ballpark, by taking an 8-4 lead into the eighth inning against Creighton (1-0) only to be outscored 7-1 by the Bluejays over the final two innings. Michael Smith (0-1) took the loss for DBU as he allowed two runs in one-third of an inning and Bryan Sova (1-0) picked up the win for Creighton after throwing 1.2 innings. Boomer Collins and Ronnie Mitchell led the Patriot offense with two hits apiece while Duncan McAlpine and Freshman Justin Wall each collected two RBI on the night.

DBU struck first in the matchup when Ronnie Mitchell and Boomer Collins each doubled with two outs in the first inning. Creighton would tie the score off DBU starter Cy Sneed in the third before taking a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth, chasing Sneed from the game. Sneed threw 4.1 innings and allowed four earned runs while walking three and striking out two. He was relieved by Aaron Gilbreath with one out in the fifth and men on first and second. He quickly induced a ground ball from Reagan Fowler that looked like it might get DBU out of the inning but Jaime Garrido‘s relay throw to first was not in time and Creighton would tack on two more runs before the inning was over.

DBU would answer loudly, though, in the bottom of the fifth when they scored six runs on three hits and the only Creighton error of the night. After back-to-back walks to start the frame, CU starter Nick Musec was lifted for Mark Winkelman. Garrido then singled while attempting a sacrifice bunt and RJ Talamantes picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice. Mike Wesolowski then grounded into what should have been an inning-ending double play but shortstop Alex Staehely’s feed to second base sailed into right field and, before the end of the inning, DBU held a 7-4 lead. Duncan McAlpine had two RBI in the inning with a 120-foot double to right field and Wall picked up his first collegiate RBI with a groundout to first.

DBU added a run in the seventh and seemingly had the game in control heading the eighth inning. The combo of Smith and Paul Voelker could not hold the lead, however, and a single DBU run in the ninth off the Creighton pitcher of record led to the final score.

DBU and Creighton will return to Horner Ballpark tomorrow for the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm with the Patriot Pregame Show beginning at 1:45 pm. Fans can catch live audio and video of the game on
