On a night when points were a premium, the Dallas Baptist Patriots fell to 5-7 in conference and 14-12 overall after losing to UT-Permian Basin (14-13, 7-6) in Heartland Conference action, 52-51. Jordan McGowen had a chance in the final second of the game to give the Patriots the lead or send the game to overtime but his two free throws drew iron and the Patriots now find themselves in an uphill battle to qualify for the conference tournament.

Nick Fox led all scorers with 22 and the Patriots shot 51.4% for the game, but it was ultimately not enough as the Falcons parlayed their 40% shooting into a win. A Ryan Marsh layup gave the Patriots a three point lead at 44-41 with 7:16 to play in the second half but that would be the final field goal DBU would tally in the match, scoring their final seven points solely on free throws. The Falcons led by five with just over a minute to play but the Patriots sank four unanswered free throws to pull within one with 53 seconds left to play but neither team could find the bottom of the next in those final seconds and at the buzzer, UTPB had held on to their one point advantage.

Now DBU must do some work the rest of this week, and get some help, to have a chance at the conference tournament. They sit one game behind UA-Fort Smith in the loss column and welcome the Lions to The Burg Center on Thursday night. UTPB also sits one up in the loss column and will play their final contest on Saturday. The Patriots need to win their final two games and then formulate what tiebreakers are nexessary for them to have a chance at the conference postseason.
