Three minutes into Monday night’s conference opener in San Antonio, St. Mary’s led by five points and from there, the game was never really in doubt as the Rattlers stretched their lead to 19 at the half and held on to win, 77-58, over visiting Dallas Baptist , dropping the Patriot record to 9-6 on the season and 0-1 in Heartland Conference play.

On the night, the Patriots shot just 43%, including a paltry 4-12 from three point range. DBU were outrebounded 32-20 and allowed the Rattlers to shoot 58% from the field. Nick Fox led  the way for the Patriots in the losing effort with a game-high 20 points while TJ Clark and Jordan McGowen scored 13 and 10 respectively to join him in double digits.

With just under seven minutes to play, St. Mary’s had stretched their lead to 22, mostly by not allowing many second-chance points for DBU (four) and with efficient work on the offensive end (3 of 7 from beyond the arc). This was the first of three conference games on the week for the Patriots as they return to the court Thursday night to take on Texas Permian-Basin in Dallas before hosting St. Edward’s on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The short two-game homestand will precede a three-game set on the road as the Patriots try to erase the memory of tonight’s game by climbing through the ranks of the Heartland Conference with a string of wins over the next three weeks. The start to the rest of the season will come at 7:00 pm in The Burg Center Thursday.
