In the first of two meetings this week between the teams, Dallas Baptist (25-10) defeated Texas Southern, 11-5, on Tuesday night at Patriot Field. Freshman Jay Calhoun (2-1) pitched a career-high seven innings to pick up the win andJaime Garrido collected three hits and two doubles. Boomer Collins homered and had three RBI and Duncan McAlpine also homered and singled. Texas Southern (17-20) had ten hits on the night but stranded six baserunners while DBU had 13 hits and stranded only five runners.

Dallas Baptist scored three runs in the first inning with a Collins triple being the big hit in the inning to score two runs. Texas Southern tied it in the fourth with three runs of their own off Calhoun, but those would be the only runs he allowed on the night, getting through seven innings on only 90 pitches.

DBU answered right back in their half of the fourth when McAlpine led off with a homerun and Garrido followed with a double high off the left field wall. He later scored on an Austin Elkins groundout and DBU led 5-3 after four innings. Garrido doubled again in the sixth inning and scored on an Elkins base hit to left, Elkins’ 15th straight game with a hit and 24th straight game to reach base. He would steal second with two outs only to be stranded as the inning ended on a flyout.

DBU increased their lead to 11-3 in seventh with five runs on five hits, including a Collins leadoff homerun. Garrido collected two RBI in the inning with a single to right that scored Michael Miller and Landon Anderson.

Texas Southern added two runs in the eighth of Tyler Rockafellow, who came in to the game in relief of Calhoun, but he closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning to preserve the win. DBU and Texas Southern will play again Wednesday afternoon in Dallas as first pitch is set to be thrown at 3:00 pm. The Pregame Show on The Patriot Broadcasting Network will begin at 2:40 pm on dbupatriots.com.
