The Patriot Men’s Golf Team opened up play on Monday, September 26, at the 13th Annual NSU Golf Classic at Muskogee Country Club in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Led by Senior Brandon Johnson, the Patriots fired rounds of 288 and 291, respectively, and will start Tuesday’s final round in a tie for fourth place with Washburn University and Our Lady of the Lake.
Johnson, who carded a first-round, two-under par 69, led the Patriots in their first day at Muskogee Country Club, as he recorded three birdies and only one bogey in the opening 18 holes. Johnson was able to overcome a couple of mid-round setbacks on his way to firing a second-round, three-over par 74, and positioning himself in a tie for 12th place overall.
Sophomore Charles Gibson and Junior Austin Strubel also played a significant role in the Patriot’s opening day of play, as both recorded a two-round total of 144, and a tie for 16th place. Gibson recorded two, one-over par rounds of 72 on his way to his best first-day total as a Patriot Golfer. Strubel, a transfer from UT-San Antonio, followed up his opening-round 74, with a one-under par 70, recording the team’s best second-round score of the day.
“I was proud of the way our guys battled out there today,” stated Head Golf Coach Kenny Trapp. “I am anxious for our guys to get out there and compete tomorrow and finish with a solid closing round.”
Also having a solid day for the Patriots was Freshman Mason Horner, who recorded rounds of 73 and 75, for a two-round total of 148 and a tie for 40th place.
Freshman Jamie Youree carded a two-round total of 155, with rounds of 79 and 76, respectively.
The Patriots will be back in action for the second round of the NSU Golf Classic on Tuesday, September 27, at Muskogee Country Club.
