Patriot Basketball Topples St. Mary’s

In an emotionally charged game against conference foe St. Mary’s (17-7, 8-5) on Thursday night, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (9-14, 5-6) jumped out to a big lead early and then had to rally late to hold off the Rattlers in Heartland Conference action. Leading by as many as 20 in the first half, DBU had to fight back for the lead with five minutes to play and then make a couple defensive stands late to preserve the win. Jonathan Perry led DBU with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Nick Fox added 25 points of his own to go along with five rebounds. Jordan Kirschke was the only other Patriot in double-figures as he scored 12 on the night in 26 minutes of play.

After two free throws to start the game after a St. Mary’s team technical foul was assessed, DBU jumped out to a 20 point lead with just over three minutes to play in the first half. However, a St. Mary’s 11-2 run to end the period would cut that lead to 11 at the half and a strong St. Mary’s push would tie the game midway through the second frame. With 3:17 left to play, and the score tied, Nick Fox would hit the jumper that gave DBU the lead for good. Perry and freshman guard Jason Gentry would try to cement the lead with free throws late but missed on front ends to two shot fouls to give St. Mary’s a chance late. A Daryell Taylor three-pointer at the buzzer however would come up short and DBU hung on to their fifth win in eleven conference tries.

The Patriots will stay on the road and travel to Texas A&M International on Saturday for a 2:00 pm tip. There will be no broadcast of this game ahead of the final two home games of the season coming up on February 28 and March 2 of next week. Fans can catch those games on the Patriot Broadcasting Network.
