Panthers Outrace the Mansfield Legacy Broncos

The final score was no way indicative of the actual game on Friday night at Mansfield’s R.L. Anderson Stadium.

The Panthers had the Broncos number from the opening kickoff.

Panthers ready to take to the Broncos

The Panthers received the opening kickoff and started their first drive at their own thirty-one yard line.  Quarterback Deandre Grimes went over the left side of the line and cutback up the middle for forty-eight yards. On the next play Grimes’ pass to senior wide receiver Jeff Thomas fell incomplete. On second and ten Junior Jaquan Cole ran up the middle for nine yards. Grimes’ hit Joel Gullett on a screen pass to the right and took the ball down to the three-yard line.  From their Grimes ran for two yards and then Cole carried the ball up the middle for a yard and a touchdown. Hector Sifuentes’ PAT was good and the score was 7-0 with 9:53 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Legacy was penalized for an illegal block and started their drive on their own sixteen-yard line. DeCarlos Humphrey took that handoff and was immediately met by the defensive line for a loss of a yard. On second down Legacy quarterback David Ellis was sacked by Fred Smith and Ghafona Iduwe for a nine yard loss. On third and twenty, Ellis completed a shovel pass to Chad Blackwood, but Duncanville was called for offsides and it was third and fifteen from the eleven yard line. Ellis dropped back for another pass, and was again sacked by the duo of Smith and Iduwe, bringing up fourth and eighteen from the eleven-yard line. Legacy tried to punt the ball, but Iduwe blocked the punt out of the end zone for a safety and Duncanville now led 9-0 with 7:10 remaining in the first.

Legacy elected to kick the ball, and Duncanville started the drive on the Legacy forty-six. Cole took the ball left for thirteen yards for a first down. Grimes pass to Devante Smith fell incomplete, and on second down Cole rushed for twelve more yards and a first down over the left and took the ball down to the Legacy twenty-four. Grimes then hit Terry Cooper for his first of two touchdowns. Sifuentes’ PAT was blocked and with 6:04 remaining in the first the score was 15-0 Duncanville.

Sifuentes’ kickoff was taken by Legacy’s Marvin Ester at their own fifteen and he brought the ball out to their own twenty-seven before being tackled.
On first down Humphrey ran for eight yards up the middle, and then on second down went up the middle for two and the first down before being tackled by Trey Edwards. Humphrey went up the middle gain for eight and then tried the middle again, but was met by Iduwe for no gain.  On fourth and three Legacy lined up for a punt, but Ellis hit Marchie Murdock for a thirty-three yard pass on a fake punt to the left. On first down at the Duncanville twenty-one Ellis hit Connor for seven over the left, but on second and four Humprey’s dropped the ball and Iduwe recovered on the fifteen yard line for Duncanville with 2:02 remaining in the first.

From their own fifteen Duncanville needed only three plays to find the end zone again. William Jackson went left for eighty-two yards to the Legacy two-yard line. Jackson went up the middle for no gain on first and goal and on second on goal Grimes hit Jeff Thomas for his first of two touchdowns. Sifuentes’ PAT was good and with forty-seven seconds remaining the score was now 22-0 Duncanville.

Starting from their own thirty-six, Humprey rushed for seven up the middle and Ellis hit Andy Ritter over the right side for eight yards to the Legacy forty-four to close out the first quarter with Duncanville leading 22-0.

On first and ten, Humphrey ran up the middle for five yards and on second down Ellis’ pass was intercepted by Tyler Mitchell at the Panther twenty-two and returned to the Duncanville forty-one.

Grimes kept the ball and ran over the left for fourteen yards, then Grimes hit Cole for a five-yard swing pass on the right, but Duncanville was penalized for a false start and the Panthers had second and ten from the DHS forty-one. Grimes went back to pass and scrambled for twenty-five yards down to the Legacy twenty-seven and Legacy was hit with a 15-yard personal foul after the play moving the ball down to the twelve-yard line. On the next play Grimes went to Cooper in the end zone for a touchdown and Sifuentes’ PAT gave Duncanville a 29-0 lead with 9:30 remaining in the half.

Panthers continuing the domination

On the kickoff Legacy was penalized for holding and took over on their own fifteen. On first down Ellis ran for one yard and was met by the Panther defense and was forced from the game with an injury. Humphrey took over at the quarterback position and tried to run right, but was met by Cordray Love for a one-yard loss. On third down and ten, Humphrey attempted a pass, but Malcolm McKenney picked it off and returned it sixteen yards for a touchdown. Sifuentes’ kick was good at with 7:51 remaining in the half Duncanville had a 36-0 lead.

On first and ten from the Legacy thirty-four, Xavier Wilborn rushed up the middle for fourteen yards. Humprey went deep on the left side and Malcolm McKenney intercepted, but the Panthers were called for pass interference and Legacy had the ball on the Duncanville thirty-seven. Wilborn rushed for two yards over the left, and then one yard up the middle, where he was tackled by Chris Canto. On third and eight Humprey threw incomplete to Cody Crawford. The Broncos elected to go for it on fourth down and Humphrey’s pass to Terrence Ivery was broken up by Love.

Taking over on downs at their own thirty-five with 5:31 left in the half, Grimes hit Jackson on a swing pass for fourteen yards. Jackson then went up the middle for five yards, and Jackson went up the middle again before putting on a nice spin move and breaking right for twelve yards to the Legacy thirty-four. Grimes went back to Jackson, but he was thrown for a one-yard loss. On second down Jackson rushed for a first down and twelve yards up the middle and breaking left again. On first and ten from the Legacy twenty-three Grimes went to Thomas again in the end zone and connected for another touchdown. The Sifuentes’ kick was good with 2:34 left in the half and Duncanville had a 43-0 lead.

The Broncos started their last drive of the half at their own eighteen and Humphrey rushed for thirty-seven yards over the left where he was tackled by Mitchell. Humphrey then went left for eighteen before he was met by Love. Wilborn took the ball up the middle for one yard. On second and nine Humphrey ran left for fifteen yards to the Panther fourteen. Humphrey then rushed for nine yards up the middle for nine, and Wilson followed it up with another rush for two yards and first down to the Duncanville three. Humphrey’s pass on first down was incomplete, and on second down Humphrey rushed left for two yards, down to the one-yard line. On third and goal Humphrey went left again for the first Legacy touchdown. Garrett Scott’s PAT made the score 43-7 with twenty seconds remaining in the game.

The Panthers had the ball on their own thirty after the kickoff where they took a knee to close out the first half and go to the locker room with a 43-7 lead.

The Broncos started the second half with the ball on their own thirty-nine where Humphrey rushed for five yards over the right on first down. On second down Humphrey completed an eighteen yard pass to Conner Smith to the Panther thirty-eight. Humphrey went left for nine yards and was pushed out of bounds by Love. On second and one Wilborn ran up the middle, but was met by Iduwe for a loss of two yards. Wilburn got the two yards back on third down and was tackled by Jamaal Fears. On fourth and one Humphrey went right for eighteen yards to the Duncanville eleven yard line. Humphrey next went four yards to the Panther two-yard line. Wilborn rushed up the middle for one yard, no gain, and the loss of a yard to bring up third and goal from the Panther two-yard line. Humphrey then hit Smith for two yards and a touchdown. Scott’s PAT was good and with 5:52 remaining in the third Duncanville led 43-14.

Duncanville was called for a personal foul and the fifteen yards was assessed on the kickoff, where the Broncos ran a successful onside kick and recovered the ball at the Duncanville thirty-five. On first and ten Legacy ran a double reverse pass where Andy Ritter hit Marchie Murdock for a thirty-five yard touchdown. Scott’s Pat for Legacy was blocked and the score now stood 43-20 with  5:41 remaining in the third quarter.

Three penalties; delay of game, holding and a false start on Duncanville, moved the ball back to the Panther seventeen-yard line. On first and twenty-five Grimes hit Cooper on a pass to right side for seventeen yards. On second and seven from the Duncanville thirty-four Grimes busted loose for a sixty-six yard touchdown run. Sifuentes’ PAT was good and Duncanville led 50-20 with 4:46 left in the third.

A win and the DHS Alma Mater

Legacy started their next drive from their own thirty-eight with a sweep by Conner Smith for eight yards. On second and two, Humphrey ran up the middle for twenty yards before being tackled by Iduwe. Humphreys went left for a yard, but the Broncos were called for holding, bringing up first and twenty from the Panther forty-four. Humphreys completed a shovel pass to Jeremy Hamilton for seven yards to the Duncanville thirty-eight. Humphrey scrambled for no gain, and then lost five yards on the next play. On fourth and nineteen the Broncos punted, but the Panthers fumbled the punt and Legacy recovered at the Duncanville seven yard line.  On first down the Broncos were flagged for a false start making it first and goal from the twelve yard line. Humphrey rushed up the middle for one and on second down Humphrey dropped back to pass, and scrambled for eleven yards and a Bronco touchdown. The Bronco’s attempted a two point conversion and Humphrey’s running attempt was good to make the score 50-28 Duncanville with nine seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Legacy attempted another onside kick, but Joel Gullett recovered the ball at the Bronco forty-nine. Cole rushed the ball right for a one yard gain to end the third quarter.

On second and nine from the fifty yard line, Cole rushed for two yards and then Grimes hit Cole over the middle for a forty-eight yard touchdown pass. Sifuentes’ PAT was good and Duncanville now led 57-28 with 11:11 remaining in the fourth.

On the ensuing kickoff the Broncos lost the ball and Duncanville recovered at the Legacy nine yard line. Duncanville only needed three plays to find the end zone again. On first down Christian Flewellen rushed right for three yards to the six, and Legacy was flagged for a facemask penalty moving the ball to the Bronco three-yard line. Zach Unogu rushed for one yard up the middle and then two yards for the touchdown. The Broncos were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, which was enforced on the ensuing kickoff. Sifeuentes’ PAT was good and Duncanville now led 64-28 with 9:51 left in the game.

Kicking off after the fifteen-yard penalty, Sifuentes’ kick went out of the end zone and the Broncos took over on their own twenty-yard line.

Humphrey completed a seven-yard pass to Andy Ritter to the Bronco twenty-seven. Legacy was penalized five yard for delay of game to bring up second and eight from the twenty-two. Humphrey’s then lost five yards when he was sacked by the entire defensive line, and on third and thirteen Jordan Hardy intercepted Humphrey’s pass at the Midlothian forty-eight.

On first down Flewellen ran to the right and Xavier Wilborn stripped the ball for Legacy and returned it for a Bronco touchdown. Scott’s PAT was good and the Duncanville lead was cut to 64-35 with 8:40 left in the game.

Legacy attempted another onside kick, but Duncanville recovered and starts their drive from the Panther forty-nine. Richard Gary rushed for no yards but Duncanville was also flagged for holding, moving the ball back to the Duncanville forty-five. Cole rushed for three yards on first and twelve, and Jackson ran for one yard to the Duncanville forty-nine, but on third and ten Duncanville was flagged for delay of game. The ball was moved back to the Duncanville forty-four for a third and fifteen. Jackson ran up the middle for six and on fourth and nine the Panthers were again called for delay of game moving the ball back to the forty-five. Art Zapata punted the ball away and Legacy took over on their own twenty-five with 4:29 remaining in the game.

On first down Jeremy Hamilton rushed for one yard before he was met by the defensive line. On second and nine Humphrey completed a twenty-six yard pass to Smith to the Panther forty-eight for a first down. Humphrey then went left for a forty-eight yard rushing touchdown. Humphrey ran the ball left again for the two-point conversion and the Duncanville lead was cut to 64-43 with 3:21 left in the fourth.

Legacy attempted another onside kick, but failed and Duncanville took over on the Bronco forty-nine. On first down William Jackson lost two yards and on second down Jackson ran up the middle for six yards. On third down Jackson ran for three yards, brining up fourth and four yards at the Legacy forty-two yard line. Duncanville attempted to convert the fourth down, but Richard Gary was thrown for a five-yard loss and Gary fumbled with Duncanville recovering it.  Still, Legacy took over on downs and it was first and ten from the Bronco forty-seven with 2:17 remaining in the game.

Legacy started their last drive with a Humphrey rush for eleven yards to the Duncanville forty-two. Humphrey rushed again on the right for two yards and on second down Humphrey hit Smith with a fifteen-yard pass on the left side of the field. Humphrey ran right for three yards and then completed a nineteen-yard pass to Murdock for a first down at the Panther two-yard line. Humphrey rushed up the middle for a one-yard loss. On second down Humphrey’s pass to the end zone fell incomplete and on third down Humphrey went up the middle for touchdown. Duncanville was flagged for a penalty, but it was declined and Scott’s PAT was good making the score 64-50 with 1:02 remaining in the game.

Legacy attempted an onside kick again, but Duncanville recovered at the Bronco forty-three.  From their Grimes came back in the game and took a knee twice to end the game with a final score of 64-50.
