Pantherettes Win a Close One to Stay Unbeaten

The #1 ranked Pantherettes faced #10 state ranked Mansfield Timberview for the second time this season, and the Lady Wolves came closer than anyone did this season to ending their winning streak.

When the two met earlier this season at the Pantherettes home arena, the Lady Wolves were handed a 22-point defeat.

ettes_mt_001This time Mansfield Timberview was ready and came out aggressive on both offense and defense. The Lady Wolves kept the game close through the first three-quarters, trailing by only four after one, seven after two, and the seven point margin was the same after three periods. In fact, The Lady Wolves had held a brief lead with 2:28 remaining in the first period, before Duncanville stretched it back to a 19-15 lead.

The first quarter was all Ariel Atkins, with 9 points, and 4 rebounds and a steal. The second quarter saw Kiara Perry come on with 7 points, 2 rebounds, and a 2 steals. The third period saw five different players scoring and well-rounded play.

But, the Lady Wolves hung close, and actually outscored the Pantherettes in the fourth period by a 17-10 margin. With seconds remaining in the game the Pantherettes held on to a 3-point lead when Timberview’s Terriell Bradley heaved up a desperation attempt from beyond the arc that was good to tie the game and sent it into overtime with the score tied at 59-59.
One of the biggest pitfalls for the Pantherettes was going 14-23 from the free throw line for the game.

ettes_mt_002However, two of the Lady Wolves’ key players, Lili Thompson, and Jalea Bennett had fouled out of the game during regulation.

The Pantherettes went on a 9-0 run at the start of the overtime period and Timberview didn’t score until 29 seconds remained in the extra period

Leading the scoring for the Pantherettes was Ariel Atkins with 23 points, followed by Kiara Perry with 17, and Tasia Foman with 10 points. Defensively Atkins had 9 rebounds and five steals, Perry got 8 rebounds and 3 steals, while Antoina Robinson had 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks.

For the Lady Wolves Lili Thompson led with 18 points, while Aurmani DeGar and Terriell Bradley had 14 points each.

The Pantherettes stay safely atop the District 7-5A standings at 9-0, followed by Mansfield Timbeview and Cedar Hill at 7-2, and DeSoto at 6-3.

On Tuesday the Pantherettes will face Midlothian (2-7) and then Cedar Hill on Friday, both games at the Sandra Meadows arena.
