Pantherettes Takedown the Lady Tigers

The Pantherettes are getting ready for the playoffs, and unfortunately for Mansfield, the Lady Tigers happened to get in their way.

Duncanville is playing a brand of defense not usually seen in girl’s high school basketball.

The first quarter was typical Pantherette style. They held their opponent to only two points until the halfway point of the quarter, while feeding Senior post Antoina Robinson the ball down low to score 8 points in the opening frame. Senior forward Kiara Perry scored 5 in the quarter. Defensively the Pantherettes had 7 steals for the quarter, and that was only the beginning of the defensive showing for Duncanville.

In the second period, Duncanville completely shut down the Lady Tiger scoring. In fact, the majority of the quarter played out in the Pantherette offensive end of the court. Between not being able to break the full-court press of Duncanville and the 4 steals, the Lady Tigers scored no points in the quarter, while Duncanville poured in 21. Led by the scoring of Junior guard Ariel Atkins with 9 point, and Perry with 5 again, the Pantherettes stretched their lead to 41-7 at the half.

The third quarter saw the Pantherette slightly slow down, scoring 17 points in the quarter, while holding the Lady Tigers to only 7 points. Atkins contributed the majority of the Duncanville scoring in the quarter with 8 points, going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

ettes_mans_002In the final period Pantherette coach Cathy Self-Morgan honored the five senior players playing their last home game by having all five on the court at the same time. The Duncanville crowd gave Kiara Perry, Tamara Washington, Destin Means, Antoina Robinson, and Shannon Franklin a standing ovation as they took the court in their final home appearance.

The Pantherettes closed out the game with Franklin scoring 6 of the Pantherettes 9 fourth quarter points to give the Pantherettes a 67-24 victory.

Delana Lopez with 12 points, Cecille Cook with 8 points, and Joycelyn Terrell with 4 points, accounted for all the scoring for the Mansfield Lady Tigers

The Pantherettes are now 34-0 for the season, 13-0 in district 7-5A, and continue with their 62-game winning streak as they prepare to face the DeSoto Lady Eagles, at DeSoto, next Tuesday evening. The Lady Eagles were in action Friday night and fell to Midlothian by a score of 36-21.
