Pantherettes Take Regional Semi Final 73-41 Over Midland Lee

Duncanville plays Plano West at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

Midland Lee jumped out with the first points, a 3-pointer by junior Karysa Edwards, but things slipped downhill quickly. Duncanville took off on a 14-0 run from that point on to take a 14-6 lead with 3:32 left in the first quarter. The Pantherettes continued the scoring run to blow out Midland Lee 73-41 in the 6A regional semi-finals.

With Midland Lee having only eight players on the active roster, it was a matter of time before the Pantherette conditioning and deep bench played a huge factor in the game. Midland Lee did not have a player over 5’10” so it was clearly evident that Duncanville held a height advantage of the Rebels.

The first half featured the Pantherettes playing a low post game with the ball being fed down low to Ciera Johnson. By the end of the half, Johnson had 19 points and was dominating the boards on both ends. Duncanville forced Midland Lee to take only perimeter shots, and with the Pantherettes dominating the boards it led to a 43-24 lead for Duncanville at the half.

Duncanville came out in the third and began their press defense and went on a 12-4 run that ran the clock down to just over thirty seconds remained in the quarter. Duncanville went on to allow only two more points in the quarter to take a 57-30 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Duncanville began to pull the starters as the fourth quarter began and gave significant time to the underclassmen, and still outscored Midland Lee 16-11.

Johnson led all scorers and had a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds for the game. Madison Townley had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Aniya Thomas followed up with 9 points, with Zarielle Green and Tae Davis had 8 points each. Duncanville out rebounded Midland Lee 31-14 to take advantage of the Pantherette’s height differential.

Midland Lee was led by Sophomore Alyasha Green and Junior Zion Niblett with 8 points each.

Plano West defeated Amarillo 74-51 in the other region I semi-final game. Duncanville defeated Plano West 72-44 earlier this year in the Sandra Meadows Classic Tournament.

The Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center is located at 5201 Ca Roberson Blvd., Fort Worth.
