Pantherettes Off to a 6-0 Start

The Duncanville Pantherettes are off to a quick start to assert themselves as the team to beat this year in division 6-A.

Duncanville kicked off the 2015-2016 season last Tuesday by hosting McKinney North, and sent the Lady Bulldogs back up I-75 with a stinging 29 point loss.

Coming up big for the Pantherettes was senior, and University of Louisville commit, Ciera Johnson with 19 points. Three other Pantherettes scored in double digits that night; Sophomore Zarielle Green with 17 points, Junior Tae Davis with 13 points, and Sophomore Starr Jacobs with 11 points.

The Pantherettes traveled to the Frisco ISD Tip-Off Classic over the weekend and ran through the tournament undefeated, averaging 81.4 points per game while holding their opponents to an average of 42.2 points per game.

“I’m so proud of the girls this past weekend,” said Pantherette Head Coach Cathy Self-Morgan. “Our conditioning has certainly paid off so far.”

Included in their wins was a 96-47 victory over Plano, the team that knocked the Pantherettes out of the playoffs last year.

Duncanville’s first game of the tournament was against Lubbock Monterey, which the Pantherettes outscoring Monterey 35-9 in the first quarter and went on to a 91-35 win. Leading the Pantherettes was Ciera Johnson with 17 points and Zarielle Green with 14 points. Senior Chrineisha Davis contributed 9 points with Senior, and University of North Texas commit, Madison Townley scoring 8 points.

Flower Mound Marcus was Duncanville’s second victim in the tournament with Duncanville winning 74-33. Ciera Johnson scored 21 points, Sophomore Aniya Thomas scored 10 points, Starr Jacobs had 8 points and Junior Jayla Johnson scored 7 points.

The next opponent for Duncanville was Prosper, who fell 86-63 to Duncanville. Zarielle Green scored 24 points, while Ciera Johnson and Madison Townley scored 18 points each and Junior Tae Davis scored 13 points.

Flower Mound didn’t fair any better against Duncanville, falling 60-33 with Zarielle Green once again leading Duncanville scorers with 15 points. Madison Townley score 10 points, Ciera Johnson 9 points, and Xavier University commit Tae Davis (Sr) scored 6 points.

In the finals of the Tip-Off Classic Duncanville met Plano with Duncanville easily handling Plano with solid and consistent scoring throughout the game. Three Pantherettes were in double-digits; Ciera Johnson with 19 points, Zarielle Green with 17 points, and Starr Jacobs with 16 points.

Walking away with tournament honors was Zarielle Green and Madison Townley, as they were named to the all-tournament team, and Ciera Johnson was named as the tournament MVP.

Duncanville will get another shot at Plano on Tuesday night when Plano travels to Duncanville for 6 p.m. tipoff against the Pantherettes at Sandra Meadows Arena. Immediately following the girl’s game, the Panthers will host Lewisville.

On Wednesday the Pantherettes leave for the McDonald’s Texas Invitational in Pasadena. Pool play starts on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. against Manvel, followed by a 4:30 p.m game against Summit. On Friday the Pantherettes have a 10:30 a.m. game with Cy Fair, before going into bracket play on Saturday. Click here to see the bracket.

The Pantherettes are listed as the #5 team in Texas UIL 6A on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, behind North Shore, Flower Mound, San Antonio Wagner, and Cy-Woods. Clear Springs, Dekaney, Amarillo, and fellow 8-6A South Grand Prairie round out the 6A TABC top ten.

The Texas Girls Basketball Coaches Association has Duncanville listed as the #1 team in 6A after their fast start to the season. Following Duncanville is Cypress Woods, Cedar Hill, San Antonio Wagner, Plano West, Houston Westside, Flower Mound, Dekaney, and Waco Midway. Galena Park North Shore, Austin Bowie and Cibolo Steele are tied for the #10 spot.
