Pantherettes KickOff Season – Start Tournament Action – 5 Players Commit to Colleges

The Pantherettes started their 2017-2018 campaign with an away game against 5A powerhouse Mansfield Timberview. After some rough patches, Duncanville escaped with a 56-54 victory. Duncanville has been selected as the top team in Texas UIL 6A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association preseason poll, with Timberview as the #2 team in 5A behind Canyon.

“What an ugly ugly win, but a great comeback,” said Pantherette head coach Cathy Self-Morgan. “We were behind by 5 to 13 most the way and came back to win.”

Senior guard Aniya Thomas led the Pantherettes with 20 points, followed by Senior post Krislyn Marsh with 12 points and Junior guard Angel Kelly with 9 points.

The Lady Wolves’ Lauryn Thompson scored 16 points in the losing effort, followed by N’Densija Collins with 11 points, and Mikayla Hutchison and Destiny Jackson with 10 points each.

Next up for the Pantherettes was the opening game of the 2017 Frisco ISD Tip-Off Classic on Thursday evening.

Duncanville played Ursuline in the opening game of the tournament and walked away with a typical Pantherette-style victory, 85-26.

Thomas led Duncanville scorers again with 15 points, Senior forward Zarielle Green had 14 points and Sophomore post Hannah Gusters scored 11 points.

The Lady Bears were led by Emma Hunt and Anna Murray with 5 points each, and Nicole Jones and O’Neil with 4 points each.

Duncanville defeated Denton Ryan 94-34 in the 9 a.m. game on Friday in the Lone Star HS competition gym and will face either Howe or Sachse at 3 p.m. on Friday in the Wakeland HS auxiliary gym.

The Pantherettes could see the Lady Wolves this weekend in the finals of the Frisco to play in the Frisco ISD Tip-Off Classic.

The Championship game for the tournament will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco. You can follow the Frisco Tip-Off bracket here.

Next up for the Pantherettes will be Pasadena McDonald’s Texas Invitational Tournament in Pasadena, Texas, November 16-18, before coming home to host Arlington Lamar on November 21, and then playing in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest on Saturday, November 25 at the Sandra Meadows Arena. This tournament will features boys and girls teams from around the nation.

In other Pantherette news, five players have signed letters of intent to play basketball for colleges across the country. Krislynn Marsh has committed to Howard University in Washington DC on a full athletic scholarship. Aniya Thomas will be playing for Kansas University, Starr Jacobs will be at the University of Houston, Zarielle Green will playing for the Lady Vols at the University of Tennessee. Asha Ross, a forward that played on the Pantherette JV last season, has signed with the University of Eastern New Mexico.
