Pantherettes Defeat Southlake Carroll to Advance

In the area game against Marcus, sophomore Tasia Foman stepped up and carried the Pantherettes to victory by posting 24 points. In the regional quarterfinals, sophomore Ariel Atkins posted 22 points to lead Duncanville past the Southlake Carroll Lady Dragons.

Atkins also had seven rebounds and one steal in the game. “Ariel plays with such heart, such a competitor. I had to pull her because she was playing so hard and was tired,” said Duncanville coach Cathy Self-Morgan.

Atkins’ 10 points led the first quarter scoring; the Pantherettes scored 15 in the quarter, while holding Southlake to 8 points. The only downside to the first quarter was that Kiara Perry got in early foul trouble with three fouls and had to sit for most of the second quarter.

Junior Antoina Robinson replaced Perry. With Robinson in the game, the Pantherettes slowed the pace of the game and worked the ball in to Robinson who scored six points in the second quarter. Atkins matched Robinson’s buckets, but without the defensive presence of Perry, Southlake was able to get back into the game and closed the gap to four points at the half with Duncanville going into the locker room with a 27-23 lead.

Perry came back out in the second half, and immediately went to work. Perry and senior Morgan Bolton each scored 4 points, while combining for three steals, three rebounds, and one blocked shot. The defensive pressure stepped up and held the Lady Dragons to only nine points in the quarter.

Two coast-to-coast fast break baskets by Bolton helped Duncanville begin to pull away. The first came with 2:25 remaining in the third that gave Duncanville a seven-point lead, and the second with only 32 seconds remaining to give the Pantherettes an 11 point lead.

Coach Self-Morgan credited the increased defensive effort in the second half with her players doing a better job of talking with each other on the court. “We were so much better, we communicated better,” said Self-Morgan.

The final period saw Southlake frantically trying to play catch-up and putting the Pantherettes on the foul line. But, Duncanville continued to stretch out their lead, with senior Empress Davenport scoring six points in the quarter.

Davenport played the game with her right heavily taped. Self-Morgan said that the hand was injured when Davenport blocked a shot or a pass, and was swollen.

Duncanville went on to score 17 points in the fourth to post a 64-46 victory.

The Pantherettes will face Amarillo on Friday evening at 8PM at the Fort Worth ISD Wilkerson-Grines Event Center. Amarillo comes out of District 2-5A where they finished with a 6-2 record. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Lubbock Coronado and Irving MacArthur game that is played at 6PM, just prior to the Pantherette game. The regional final game will be played at 1PM on Saturday at Wilkerson-Grines.
