The Duncanville Pantherettes defeated the Lady Mustangs of League City Clear Springs 64-40, but the Lady Mustangs did not go quietly. They showed the same determination and will that was seen at the Sandra Meadows Classic in their five-overtime thriller against Plano West.

Scoring leader Ariel Atkins struggled in the first quarter, scoring only a single field goal for the period. Atkins credited her team for helping to get her focus back. “They kept encouraging me,” said Atkins.

Apparently, the encouragement worked, Atkins finished out the game with 29 points. “The mindset is to play hard the entire game,” Atkins added.

The Pantherettes held a 14-7 lead after the first period, and started pulling away in the second. Going on an 8-0 run to push the lead up to 22-7 until 4:07 remained in the half. That’s when the Lady Mustangs started their comeback. The Lady Mustangs scored 16 points in the last four plus minutes of the quarter, while holding Duncanville to only 5 points the rest of the first half, to go into the locker room with the Pantherettes holding on to a 27-23 lead.

Pantherette Coach Cathy Self-Morgan regrouped her team at the half and had to get them refocused and not angry. They weren’t angry with each other, but at the fact that they had allowed the Lady Mustangs to get back into the game. She reminded them that they had to play better defense, “defense wins.”

When the third quarter started, Lady Mustang Senior guard Kaylin Roher nailed a 3-pointer to cut the Duncanville lead to 27-26. Coach Self-Morgan called a time out to gather her team, and it worked. That 3-point bucket was the only points the Lady Mustangs scored in the period. The Pantherettes went on a 17-0 run to give the Pantherettes a 44-26 lead going into the final period.

The Lady Mustangs  could not get any closer than 18 points during the fourth quarter, with Duncanville outscoring them 20-14 in the period.

Two of the biggest stats for the game was the rebounding and blocked shot numbers for the Pantherettes. Duncanville out rebounded Clear Springs 44-21 and Duncanville blocked 11 shots compared to none for Clear Springs.

When asked if her team was intimidated by the height advantage of the Pantherettes, Clear Springs Head Coach Pamela Crawford said, “I wouldn’t use the word intimidated, we couldn’t execute after the block.”

Pantherette Kiara Perry talked about the Duncanville rebounding strategy, “When we send four people to rebound and one safety, we are going to get the ball.”

The Lady Mustangs were led by Senior Courtnie Latham with 16 points, and Junior Brooke McCarty with 14 points.

When asked about their first time appearance at the state tournament and if the lack of experience affected their game McCarty responded, “our first time here, but that’s no excuse.”

Latham said, “It was great to get over that hump and get here, but it suck to go home.”

The Pantherettes were asked if they were worried when Clear Springs got to within one point, Tasia Foman responded. “As hard as we work and practice, we will never be complacent. We got that feeling last year (of winning a state championship) and we want it again.”

When asked about her team’s play and their ability to turn it on when they have to, Self-Morgan explained, “They played hard and did what they had to do. They covered for each other. That’s what they’ve done all year.”

The Pantherettes opponent for the state finals was decided late Friday night when the Cibolo Steele Lady Knights (32-5) upset the #2 state-ranked team, the Pflugerville Lady Panthers, by a score of 69-60.

Cibolo Steele comes out of district 28-5A and is coached by Kari Wallace. The Lady Knights have four previous appearances in the state tournament.

The State Championship game is scheduled to start at 8:30PM on Saturday. MyDuncanville.com will be providing a live gamecast on our website.
