Pantherettes Defeat L.D. Bell to Advance in Playoffs

In what turned out to be an ugly win, Duncanville came out on top and advanced in the 5A Girls’ Basketball playoffs by a score of 68-33. Coach Cathy Self-Morgan gave her trademark smile and added, “we’ll take it.”

Duncanville took the opening tip and never really looked back, but Coach Self-Morgan couldn’t rely on Empress Davenport to provide her usual spark. Hit with early foul trouble, Davenport was taken out of her game and never really got untracked, scoring only one point for the game, well short of her 13.7 ppg average.

However, the Pantherette defense had no problems keeping L.D. Bell’s leading scorer in check as well. Cierra Johnson, the Lady Raiders leading scorer at 13.8 ppg, finished with only 8 points and all but two of those coming from the free throw line.

At the halfway point of the first quarter the Pantherettes had taken a 13-5 lead and closed the period out with a score of 19-7. The Pantherettes were led by sophomore guards Ariel Atkins and Tasia Foman with 6 points each. The Pantherettes contested almost every shot taken by the Lady Raiders, with Foman, Atkins, and Kiara Perry registering blocks in the quarter.

In the second, the guards started feeding Antoina Robinson down low and she responded with 4 points in the quarter, but also pulled down 5 rebounds to help the Pantherettes go into the locker room with a 31-13 lead. The Pantherettes defense held Bell scoreless until 3:19 remaining in the second, when they scored to make it 27-8.

In the third period, Tasia Foman found her stroke again and broke out for 9 points. Defensively Atkins tallied another block, 2 rebounds and 2 steals in the quarter. Duncanville held a 49-24 lead going into the fourth.

The final period six Pantherettes got into the scoring action, with senior Morgan Bolton scoring 6 points, Atkins and Foman had four each. The Pantherettes closed out the game with a score of 68-33.

Atkins was the defensive standout for the Pantherettes with 2 blocks, 5 steals, and 9 rebounds to go along with her 14 points scored in the game. The leading scorer for Duncanville was Foman with 19 points.

Next up is Flower Mound Marcus who defeated Denton Guyer 39-27. Game date, time, and location are to be determined.
