Pantherettes Advance to Face Irving MacArthur in the Regional Finals

The Duncanville Pantherettes got their groove back and eliminated the Amarillo Lady Sandies from the playoffs to setup that game that everyone has been talking about for most of the year.

The Pantherettes handed Amarillo a 60-29 loss in the Regional Semi-Finals at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center on Friday evening. Duncanville will be facing Irving MacArthur at 1pm on Saturday at the same location.

“This is the state championship,” said Coach Cathy Self-Morgan when asked about playing MacArthur.

MacArthur defeated Lubbock Coronado to advance in the playoffs by a score of 76-62 on the shooting of senior Alexis Jones, who scored 44 points in McArthur’s victory.

Duncanville had four scorers in double figures, Ariel Atkins and Tasia Foman both scored twelve points apiece, and Morgan Bolton and Empress Davenport contributed eleven points each.

The Pantherettes defense also came back strong against Amarillo. Duncanville ran up to a 6-0 lead, before Amarillo finally scored with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter. The Sandies didn’t find another bucket until less than three minutes remained in the quarter. The Pantherettes closed out the quarter with a 20-7 lead. While Perry contributed only one bucket, She made her presence known defensively with four rebounds and a steal in the quarter. For the game Perry had eleven rebounds, one block and one steal.

In the second quarter, Morgan Bolton got hot and dropped in six points, to help the Pantherettes to a 34-16 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw Davenport impact the game with two three-point shots, while Atkins dominated defensively with four rebounds, and two steals. The Pantherettes once again held Amarillo to only seven points, while they scored twenty again to take a 54-23 lead into the fourth.

The Pantherettes closed out the game by slowing the pace down, scoring only six points in the fourth, and holding Amarillo to only six points to secure the victory 60-29.

After the game Coach Self-Morgan was already starting to look at how Duncanville would be planning for MacArthur’s Alexis Jones.

“We’ve just got to play our game. She distributes the ball so well you can’t double her very much,” said Self-Morgan. “We don’t have an Alexis Jones, but we’ve got twelve kids with a lot of heart that are going to do what we need to do to play hard and get it done.”

If you can’t be at the game at the Wilkerson-Grienes Activity Center at 1PM on Saturday, you can tune into the game on Sportsgram Internet Sports Network to catch all the action.
