MacArthur’s Alexis Jones came into the game against the Pantherettes having scored 44 points against Lubbock Coronado.

Coach Cathy Self-Morgan had game planned to rotate three players on Jones. “I was going to go with Tasia (Foman), E (Empress Davenport), and Ariel (Atkins), and they were ready for it, but Empress did a heck of a job.”

Jones scored all eleven of the Cardinals points in the first quarter, but Davenport took Jones out of the offense starting in the second quarter. “I knew I was going to be guarding her from the start. I didn’t have that many fouls. I had two fouls. I believe I guarded her to the best of my ability. Every time she went up, I had my hands straight up. Nobody else wanted this worse than I did, worse than the team did,” said Davenport.

All season the Pantherette offense has been a team effort, and this game was no different. Atkins (5 points) and Kiara Perry (4 points) led the first quarter points for the Pantherettes. However, the defensive tone of the game was set when Jones went up with a floater for MacArthur, and Foman sent the ball flying with a huge block. The Pantherettes totaled seven rebounds in the first, with Perry, Morgan Bolton, and Atkins contributing. The Lady Cardinals finished the first with an 11-10 lead.

In the second quarter, the Pantherettes kept the defense tight, holding MacArthur to ten points, with six of those coming from two shots beyond the arc by Jones. Morgan Bolton led the Pantherettes with five points, but the player making a huge impact in the game was junior Antoina Robinson and her low post play. Robinson scored four points in the quarter, and allowed the Pantherettes to control the pace of the game. The half ended with the teams deadlocked at 22-22.

Empress Davenport kept the defensive pressure on Jones, holding her to four points on the quarter. Most of the quarter Jones could be found playing well beyond the 3-point arc with Davenport in her back pocket. Tory Jacobs of MacArthur tried to keep the Lady Cardinals in the game offensively by scoring five in the third, and four in the fourth. Perry scored six in the third, with three rebounds and a steal, keeping Duncanville to trailing by one point at the end of the third, 35-36.

Both teams battled back in forth in the final period of regulation, with Duncanville taking a five-point lead, 43-38, with five minutes remaining in the fourth. But, MacArthur closed the gap in the final second of regulation to tie the game 51-51 with twenty-four seconds remaining. Jones was held to one field goal, and 4-6 from the foul line, while Atkins scored six, and Foman and Davenport scoring four each.

With the game tied at the end of regulation, the teams went into a four minute overtime period. With 3:10 remaining in OT, MacArthur stepped out to a four-point lead on the shooting of Jones to lead 51-55. The Pantherettes went on an 11-0 run to close out the game, holding the Lady Cardinals scoreless the final three minutes of overtime to advance to play in Austin by a score of 62-55.

When asked how long she would be celebrating the victory, Self Morgan already had her plans in place. “I’m thinking I can still make it to Waco by six, in time for the finals at Baylor.” Spring Dekaney is playing Sachse at Baylor to determine who advances in the tournament.

The state tournament runs March 1-3 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. MyDuncanville.com will be at the tournament providing coverage.
