Sophomore Hanna Gusters Named MVP

Capturing their third straight McDonald’s Texas Invitational Tournament Championship should not have been an easy task, but the Duncanville Pantherettes sure made it look that way.

The Pantherettes made short work of Converse Judson in the Gold Division championship game by defeating Converse Judson 52-40. The 32-point victory surpassed the 2015 22-point victory over North Shore.

Duncanville received a huge boost from Sophomore Hanna Gusters’ 29-points as she led all scorers in the championship victory. Senior forward Zarielle Green wasn’t too far behind as she contributed 26-points in the winning effort.

The Lady Rockets tried to keep it close, with Duncanville holding a 10-9 lead in the first quarter. But, the Pantherettes went on a 10-2 run and Duncanville held a 20-11 lead after the first period. In the second period the game became completely out of hand as Duncanville outscored Judson 24-12 to hold a 44-25 lead at the half.

Then things got worse for the Lady Rockets in the second half. Duncanville came out with their patented Pantherette third quarter push and went on to score the first 8 points to start the period.

The Pantherettes defeated Cy-Falls 83-43, Mansfield Summit 58-35 and Houston Westside 85-43 in pool play before starting bracket play on Saturday. Duncanville downed Houston Cypress Ranch 68-47 before taking on Converse Judson in the championship game.

Next up for the Pantherettes is a home game against 4-2 Arlington Lamar on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Sandra Meadows Arena. The Pantherettes will then participate in the Thanksgiving HoopFest on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Putnam City West (OK) at the Sandra Meadows Arena.
