Offensive Explosion Helps to Sweep of ORU

Looking for a three-game sweep of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (5-9) on Sunday, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (8-8) exploded for eleven runs over a three-inning span late in the game to win their third straight and move their record to .500 for the first time in a week. Justin Wall helped lead the offensive charge with four hits, a homerun, and three RBI while Austin Listi also homered and collected three RBI. Blake Webster was credited with the win in relief after a fantastic three innings of work, striking out two and walking only one.

The Dallas Baptist offense did not waste any time on the cold, grey afternoon. Jaime Garrido opened the game with a clean single to right. Ronnie Mitchell followed with a safety of his own and, after a popout, Justin Wall singled to right to score Garrido and move Mitchell to third. He would score the second run of the inning on a Michael Miller two-strike groundout and DBU had an early two run lead.

That lead would not last long, however, as the Golden Eagles got to Taylor for five runs on eight hits over the next four innings. He was lifted with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth inning – the third straight start for the freshman righthander in which he did not complete five innings. Jay Calhoun was called on to clean up the mess in the fourth, which he did, but not before allowing a two-run, two-out single to push the deficit to three runs.

In the sixth, the Patriot offense took over. Finally able to get into the Oral Roberts bullpen, the Patriots erupted for eleven runs and eight hits between the sixth and eighth innings – including homeruns from Justin Wall, his first, and Austin Listi‘s third of the season. The Patriots batted around in the sixth and the eighth against four ORU relievers and took a 13-6 lead into the ninth for reliever Paul Voelker.  He came on in place of Blake Webster who had another outstanding outing , throwing three innings without allowing a hit or run, striking out two.

Voelker threw a scoreless ninth to preserve the seven run lead and the sweep of the Golden Eagles. Dating back to the 2011 Fort Worth Regional, this was the fifth straight win for DBU over ORU, including a game in the 2012 Waco Regional. The Patriots will travel Tuesday to Stephen F. Austin for a 6:30 pm start against the Lumberjacks. The Patriot Pregame Show will begin at 6:05 pm with Brendan Smith and Reagan Ratcliff on the call.
