Offense Sputters Against Texas Southern

One day after using a quality offensive output to finish a comeback against Texas Southern (8-7), Dallas Baptist (5-8) could not regain that form on Wednesday afternoon at Horner Ballpark and fell to visiting Texas Southern, 6-4. Mustering only eight hits on the afternoon, DBU fell behind in the second inning after giving up five walks and two hits in the first two frames and could not overcome the challenge of a second straight game needing an offensive push late to garner a win.

Joseph Shaw was dealt the loss in his first collegiate start after completing only one full inning and allowing three earned runs on no hits while walking four. He was relieved by fellow freshman Caulin Cragle and Cragle did not fare much better. The righthander also threw one inning and walked one while giving up two hits and three earned runs. Those two innings would allow Texas Southern to jump out on top by four runs after DBU opened the game with two runs in the first. Ronnie Mitchell scored after a walk on a Boomer Collins double and Collins scored two batters later on a Duncan McAlpine sacrifice fly.

That would be all the scoring for DBU until the sixth when they scored a lone run followed by another single tally in the eighth. Michael Miller finished the day with two hits for the offense as did Nash Knight. Knight also stole a base and had an RBI. Jay Calhoun helped quiet the Texas Southern bats in the middle frames as he threw five innings of scoreless baseball before giving way to Patrick Hicks and Paul Voelker, who each threw a scoreless frame. But, in the end, it was not enough to overcome the six runs in the early frames for an offense looking for an identity early in the season.

DBU will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a three-game set with Oral Roberts beginning on Friday, March 8. Game one is set for a 6:30 pm start with Jake Johansen set to go for DBU. Listen live to all three games on
