Three Longhorns scored in double-figures to lead Texas in the First Round win

texassports.com – Three Longhorns scored in double-figures to lead second-seeded Texas Women’s Basketball past the Maine Black Bears on Saturday night in the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s First Round at the Erwin Center, 83-54. UT led by as many as 35 in the second half.

Junior forward Jatarie White paced the Longhorns with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 20 minutes. Senior guard Ariel Atkins contributed 16 points, four assists, and two steals while junior guard Lashann Higgs poured in 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, dishing out four assists in 23 minutes.

Texas was 34-of-55 (61.8 percent) from the field and 75 percent (6-of-8) from three-point range. UT won the rebounding battle by a 43-12 margin and recorded 42 paint points. The Longhorn defense held Maine to just 3-of-19 (15.8 percent) shooting from beyond the arc.

The Longhorns converted on 8-of-10 shots to open the contest as Texas built a 19-8 lead with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter. UT recorded the final four points of the period to extend their advantage to 15 (23-8) heading to the second quarter.

Texas led 35-13 with 6:52 to play in the half after six points from White fueled a 10-0 Longhorn run over a 2:08 stretch. The UT defense held Maine to just 1-of-10 shooting over the final 8:43 as Texas headed to the locker room with a 45-18 lead.

Higgs paced the Longhorns with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field in the first half. Atkins added 10 points, two boards and two assists in the opening 20 minutes. Texas was 19-of-28 (67.9 percent) from the field, including 71 percent (5-of-7) from beyond the arc. UT held the Black Bears to just 12.5 percent (1-of-8) shooting from deep in the opening 20 minutes.

Texas held a 34-point advantage (58-24) at the 5:12 mark in the third quarter following an 11-4 spurt from the Longhorns. A jumper from Higgs dropped before the buzzer to give UT a 67-34 lead at the end of the third period. Jordan Hosey closed out the scoring in the final stanza for the Longhorns to seal the 83-54 win for UT.

Tanesha Sutton paced the Black Bears with 16 points.
