No. 6/6 Texas Women’s Basketball suffers loss to No. 3/3 Baylor

Filed under: Sports,UT Women's Basketball | — The No. 6/6 Texas Women’s Basketball team struggled to gain momentum on Thursday night in Waco, falling to No. 3/3 Baylor 81-56 in the Ferrell Center.

Texas leads the series 58-37, but Baylor has won 16 of the last 17 meetings.

“We have to move on,” said head coach Karen Aston. “We’re too good of a team to let one bad performance turn into two or three bad ones.”

Baylor’s defense limited Texas to 27 first-half points. The Lady Bears led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter, before Texas was able to recollect seven points to end the game in a 25-point deficit. Fifty-six total points is a season low for the Longhorns’ normally high-powered offense, which entered the game ranked eighth in the nation in scoring offense.

Texas (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) was led in points by senior Brooke McCarty with 16, followed by junior Lashann Higgs with 13. The team combined for eight assists, four blocks, and nine steals.

Lady Bears (18-1, 8-0 Big 12) players Lauren Cox, Kalani Brown, and Kristy Wallace combined for 61 points, 28 rebounds, and 10 assists. Baylor shot 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the field, 33.3 percent (2-for-6) in three-pointer shooting, and 78.9 percent (15-for-19) from the line.

Next, the Longhorns will host the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday, January 27 at home. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
