Middle School Track Duo Takes Silver

Good grades are no longer the biggest accomplishments of two Duncanville ISD eighth graders – they’re now Olympic athletes! Middle schoolers Malik Orr (Byrd) and Rashaun O’Neal (Reed) competed in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics National Track and Field Championships this summer. They were two of four members of the Dallas Blaze 4x800m relay team, an AAU summer track club. Orr and O’Neal’s relay team placed first in regional competition, securing them a spot in the finals.

A veteran runner, O’Neal has been a Dallas Blaze member for the past five years. He also ran track at Reed last spring. “I like the feeling of it,” he said. “If you work hard and practice, you’ll do well.” Now in his first year on the team, Orr admits he’s proud of how it ended – Dallas Blaze took home the silver medal at the Junior Olympics. “My parents were happy and surprised because this was my first year to participate. Even my coach said he hadn’t seen someone so new do that well before.”

While the gold medal was just out of reach, both boys say that they were leading the race for a while and hope to clench the first place title next summer. They also plan to run track for the district this spring. With a promising start to what will hopefully be a long career in track, both boys say they’d love a college scholarship in either track or football. Orr and O’Neal were also named All American and National Honor Roll recipients by the National Elite Youth Ranking System.
