The cardiology team at Methodist Charlton has once again been named a top performer for heart attack care by the Dallas County STEMI System of Care. During the third quarter of 2012, Methodist Charlton ranked No. 1 in door-to-balloon (D2B) average in the county, with an average D2B time of just 50 minutes, far ahead of the national goal of 90 minutes. Also, out of the top D2B performers, Methodist Charlton holds eight of the fastest times, and 4 of the top 10. D2B time is the number of minutes between the patient’s arrival in the emergency department and the opening of the blocked artery following a heart attack.

The award was given as a result of data submitted to the American Heart Association Dallas Caruth Initiative. This is the second time Methodist Charlton has received such an award. During the fourth quarter of 2011, Methodist Charlton and DeSoto Fire Rescue received an award for the fastest total combined patient treatment time.

Methodist Charlton has also received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry® – GWTG ™ Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2012 — one of only 73 hospitals nationwide to do so.

charlton_logo“I am proud of the cohesive team effort and support demonstrated by our cardiology team at Methodist Charlton,” says Methodist Charlton Cardiology Services Manager Jonathan Aldama, R.N. “Physicians and staff work together with one common goal–to provide the best possible care for our patients. Because Methodist Charlton places the patient’s needs in the forefront of their decision-making process, we will continue to make a huge difference in many lives on a daily basis.”

In the short time since the Methodist Charlton open heart surgery program began in November 2011, the program has exceeded expectations with over 100 surgeries performed in just 15 months. Although the program is new to Methodist Charlton, its physicians, nurses, and staff bring decades of open heart surgery experience to the program. Cardiology services at Methodist Charlton continue to grow with the recent expansion of the post-coronary interventional unit at a cost of 2.8 million, an intermediate care unit to serve patients who require more monitoring and closer observation, and 24/7 interventional cardiology coverage.
