Long Ball Leads to Patriot Win Over UAFS

Thirty-five seconds into Thursday night’s game in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Charles Allen hit a three-pointer. Less than a minute later, Nick Fox mirrored the effot and the Dallas Baptist Patriots (7-11, 4-4) had a six point lead over Arkansas-Fort Smith (11-7, 7-1). After four straight Fort Smith points made it a 6-4 game, Cory Carden joined the three parade with one of his own and the tone for the night was officially set for DBU. Aided by twelve more three-point baskets, a career-high 19 points from Freshman Jason Gentry, and 17 points from Wesley Gipson, the Patriots ran away and hid from a team that came into the game undefeated in conference play and won going away, 93-79.

The 93 points is the second most scored by DBU this season as they jumped out to a 47-35 lead at the half. Their defense held the Lions, one of the top scoring teams in the Heartland Conference, to 41.7% shooting for the night and Nick Fox and Remy Ndiaye cleaned up most of the missed shots by UAFS to tally eight rebounds a piece. Both the big men also added 11 points to the Patriot ledger.

The well-rounded team effort and hot-shooting allowed DBU to maintain a double-digit lead most the game. Charles Allen shot 3-4 from beyond the arc to score 16 points as part of the DBU 68% shooting night from long range. The only place DBU stuggled from the floor was uncharacteristically from the foul line. The Patriots shot 16 of 27 from the charity stripe for 59%, a season-low for a team that shoots almost 80% from the line.

The win for DBU over the first-place team in the league keeps the middle of the pack jumbled in the Heartland Conference race to the postseason. Four teams are currently within a half-game of the third and fourth place spots in the standings with six conference games left the play. The Patriots will travel to Newman University for a game Saturday against the second place Jets at 2:00 pm. Fans can catch all the action on the Patriot Broadcasting Network with Brendan Smith beginning with a 1:45 pm PreGame Show (www.dbupatriots.com/showcase).
