Last Second Shot Sinks Patriots

In a forty minute game Thursday night in Dallas, the Dallas Baptist Patriots (7-13, 4-6) led St. Edward’s (14-11, 3-5) for almost 38 minutes. The few short lead changes in the middle of the game did not hurt the Patriots – but a basket by Chris Wacker after an offensive rebound with 3.3 seconds left in the game did and DBU fell to the Hilltoppers, 65-63. The Wacker basket came after DBU scored only two points in the final five minutes of play and after the Patriots held a lead of as many as 13 in the first half.

Nick Fox secured another double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Charles AllenJonathan Perry, andJason Gentry each scored in double-digits but it was not enough as the Patriot offense went cold at the end of both halves. In the first half, the Patriots did not score in the final 6:36, which cut a ten-point lead down to two at 29-27. In the second half, the Patriots were only able to salvage two Fox free throws in the final 5:14 but held a one-point advantage with under a minute to play. St. Edward’s wound down the clock on their final possession looking for the last shot and the win and after a Shimeek Johnson attempt from under the basket clanged off the rim, it looked like the Patriots might sneak home with a victory. However, in the scramble for the rebound, Wacker was able to secure the ball and his bank shot from the right side of the lane was good along with a foul and the subsequent free throw. A DBU timeout would lead to a Gentry running three pointer from just outside the arc but his shot found nothing but the backboard and the Hilltoppers secured a season-sweep of DBU in Hearltand Conference play.

DBU held St. Edward’s to under 40% shooting on the night but twenty turnovers by the Patriots allowed SEU just enough for the win. Allen scored 12 for DBU while Carden and Perry each collected 10 points while Allen also pulled down eight rebounds. The Patriots will step away from conference play on Saturday as they welcome future Heartland Conference member McMurry to the Burg Center at 2:00 pm. Fans can listen live on as Brendan Smith and Reagan Ratcliff call the action beginning with the Pregame Show at 1:45 pm.
