Lady Patriots Fall in First Round of Conference Tournament

The Dallas Baptist Lady Patriots (19-9) finished the regular season one-half game ahead of St. Edward’s (18-9) in the standings and earned a #2 seeding in the Heartland Conference Tournament, one spot ahead of the #3 Hilltoppers. But, after the first round of the single-elimination conference tournament hosted by Arkansas-Fort Smith, it is the team from Austin that is moving on to the championship game after scooting past DBU, 3-1, on Friday night. The Lady Patriots will return to Dallas, finished with the 2012 season for the time being.

St. Edward’s won the first set easily, 25-18, only to the see the Lady Patriots climb back into the match with a 25-22 win in set two. But that would be the final victory for DBU as they dropped sets three and four, 25-18 and 25-21. In the loss, All-Conference selection Erika Papadeas led the way on offense with 17 kills while Tiara Iwegbu chipped in 14. Ashley Kay also closed out the match with double-digit kills, recording 11. Tyler Bradsher and Kaycie Bird continued their combination of assists with 25 and 23, respectively. Four different Lady Patriots finished with double-digit digs with Cameron Hartson leading the back row with 27.

The only hope for the Lady Patriots to continue their season at this point is an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament. That scenario is not improbable, but highly unlikely. If this was the final match for the Lady Patriots in 2012, they will finish the year one game shy of the 20-win mark and will say goodbye to the playing career of All-Heartland Conference Player Kristin Secord. With Secord as the only graduating senior, the future looks bright for DBU Volleyball – but they will most likely have to wait several months to see that future come to fruition.
