Persistent offensive pressure led to 21 shots on the day for the Lady Patriots as they battled Fort Hays State in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Patriot Soccer Field. The field seemed slanted in favor of DBU as they pounded 13 of those shots on goal and limited Fort Hays to six shots, only two of which found their way on goal.
After a scoreless first half, however, it was Fort Hays who had a chance to steal the momentum and the lead around the 59 minute mark. A DBU foul at the edge of the box saw the referee award a penalty kick to Jamie Babyak of FHSU. She chose to shoot toward the right side of the goal and Kerry Edwards, the three-time Conference Player of the Week, showed why the Lady Patriots have put up five straight shutouts. With a dive to her left and a fingertip save, the game remained knotted at 0-0 and DBU remained in control of the match.
DBU was finally able to get one past Kelsey Grey in the Fort Hays net in the 78th minute. Baylie Hill took a shot from near the top of the box that was blocked by a Tiger defender. That block deflected onto the foot of Kourtney Edwardsand she found the back of the net for what ended up being the gamewinning goal.
With two minutes to play, DBU extended their lead as Hill picked up her second assist of the game. She played a ball from the left side to Brittany Layne who chested it down to herself and cracked a half-volley past Grey. That would be more than enough for Kerry Edwards as she posted her eighth shutout of the season and the ninth total for the team.
With the win, DBU improves to 10-4-1 on the season. They play a big game Saturday in Austin against St. Edward’s University – the only team that sits atop them in Heartland Conference standings. That game is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
