The Lady Patriot Volleyball Team dropped Game 1 of the Washburn Fall Classic  to Southwest Baptist Univeristy. The Lady Patriots had a chance to take control of the match, leading Game 1, 23-21, before falling in the fifth set.

Up 23-21 late in the first game, DBU felt confident that momentum was on their side and a lead was in their grasps. An SBU kill, ace, and then back-to-back attack errors by DBU handed Game 1 to the Bearcats.”I thought that hurt us,” said Head Coach Cathy Ray Kokel. “But I was pleased with how we bounced back and got right back into the match.”

Game 2 was tied at 20 before DBU took control with five straight points to knot the match at one. They rode that victory to another 25-20 victory after opening Game 3 on a 5-2 run. Trying to close out the match in four games, DBU allowed SBU to take an early lead at 6-2 and the Bearcats tied the match at two games apiece with their own 25-20 win.

In the tiebreaking and match-deciding 5th set, the teams traded points and mini-runs as the score sat 12-12 before SBU scored two straight to take it to match point. DBU tried to answer with a point of their own and climb back into the match but SBU held on to win the final game, 15-13.

Kokel said, “We worked. We played hard. We need to find a way to close teams out late in games. The good thing about a tournament, though, is that you don’t get to dwell on it. You jump right back in there and play again.”

The Lady Patriots play their second game beginning at 2:00 against host Washburn University.
