Hold Stars to no runs, 4 hits in two games

CEDAR HILL, Texas – A weekend trip across the Red River turned out to be just what the Northwood nine needed. In two days (2/8 & 2/9), the Knights won all four games, which were held  at Oklahoma City University’s Jim Wade Field.

In the Friday double-header, Northwood shut out the OCU Stars in tilts, winning 1-0 and 4-0.  Cody Gray was the winning pitcher in the opener Friday, giving up just two hits and striking out six OCU batters in the 7-inning game.  The Knights pushed across the only run they would need in the fifth inning, when shortstop Elvin Rodriguez doubled.  Both Gray and OCU’s Derek Howell threw complete games in a contest that was well-pitched by both teams.

In Friday’s second game, the Knights again shut out the Stars, with Roman Gomez throwing a two-hitter to get the win.  The Knights had nine hits, with Jordan Lewis and Estevan Hernandez each managing a pair.  Isaac Maturino homered for the Knights.

“Oklahoma City is always a good early season test for us,” head coach Jeremy Kennedy said.  “Our guys played extremely well in both games – OCU can really hit and hasn’t been shut out since 2008.”

On Saturday, the Knights took on Mid-America Christian University in a game that got underway at 10 AM.  Northwood scored 17 runs on 17 hits, with Rodriguez and catcher Adam Humes each knocking out three hits.  Clayton Woodruff pitched five scoreless innings to get the win.  Edgar Valle and Billy Feathers pitched the fifth and sixth innings.

In the final game Saturday, Northwood beat Benedictine University, 1-0. Rodriguez, Jordan Fuller and Jordan Lewis each had doubles, with the Knights totaling seven hits on the day.  Cody Faulkner threw a one-hitter to get the win. The Knights, now 5-3 on the season, play at home this weekend (2/15, 2/16, & 2/17), taking on Wayland Baptist University Friday and York University Saturday and Sunday.
