Knights Return From New Mexico, Now Stand 11-5

It’s a long bus ride from Cedar Hill to Hobbs, New Mexico.  But the scenery must have been good for the Knights’ surging baseball team as they took all three weekend (2/22 – 2/23) games from the host University of the Southwest Mustangs.

The series also marked the opening of Red River Athletic Conference play for the Knights, who are now 11-5 on the season.

In the Friday opener Northwood sailed to an 11-0, run-rule win that went only five innings.

Shortstop Elvin Rodriguez had four hits in as many at-bats, including a homer.  Rodriguez had four RBI on the day, while Cody Gray went all the way on the mound to get the win.

Friday’s second game was a much different affair, with Northwood scoring three runs in their half of the sixth inning to come back from an early 2-0 deficit.

The Mustangs had pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first, but were shut down the rest of the way by starter Roman Gomez, who pitched into the ninth.

Colton Reavis came in to get the final two outs and preserve the win.

The final tilt of the three-game set was another close contest, with the Knights prevailing, 4-3.  The game was tied after six, with Cody Faulkner andKeaton Parsell holding the Mustangs to just two runs.   Clayton Woodruff pitched the seventh and eighth and was credited with the win.  Reavis threw the final frame, giving up one run to get the save.  The Knights had scored twice in the eighth to go up 4-2.

“We’re playing pretty good right now,” Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy remarked.  “Our pitching has been mostly solid all season.  The hitting seems like it’s beginning to come around.  If we stay on this track we can be pretty good.”

Northwood plays a non-conference game Tuesday (2/26) at the University of Texas at Dallas, then visits RRAC foe Southwest Assemblies of God University at Waxahachie this weekend (3/1 and 3/2).

The Knights return home March 8th and 9th to take on Texas College.
